Abstract

This article proposes a re-reading of the novel Mapocho by Nona Fernandez (Municipal Literary Prize, 2003). In it, the author discusses Fernandez' interpretation of the historian's mission in the foundation process of the nation, the place of the ethnic, sexual and political minorities within the national project, and the strategies of resistance employed by these groups. The conclusion is that the novel Mapocho inverts the option of national romance; insofar as rape, orphanage and incest constitute an allegory of the failure of the Chilean national project in the XX century.
