Franco regime in Spain (1936-1975) created a dense network of repression, seeking eliminate both physically and ideologically the Republican enemy and terrorizing the population as a whole. To achieve this goal, repression reached all possible areas of life; economic, social, cultural, ideological, political, and was an instrument of domination, humiliation and forced consensus. Repression was hard-wired into the Franco regime and converted the whole country into one wide prison. This article carries out a quantitative and qualitative analysis of Franco repression in order to establish its main characteristics.
