This article seeks, from the exercise of critical comparison of the texts Arte Popular y Sociedad en América Latina (1977) and Culturas Híbridas. Estrategias para entrar y salir de la modernidad (1990), both of the authorship of philosopher Néstor García Canclini, to test and allow an understanding of the concept of the “postmodern turn" in Latin American critical theory of mid to late twentieth century. Particularly, it is intended to notice its relevance to the configuration of a thought regarding the social function of art, its relationship with the communication field and the gradual consolidation of the cultural industries in
Latin America.
