Chilean Education in Times of Emergency: Educating and Learning During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Authors

Abstract

Education has undergone important changes during the period of the health crisis. Schools and families have had to adapt to new ways of generating learning and, jointly, solving accessibility gaps in terms of communication, technology and territorial distribution. In the case of Chile, the current educational macro and micro policies that arose during the pandemic have played a transcendental role regarding how teaching-learning processes are designed, implemented and lived from the home. For this reason, it is imperative to know the perceptions of teachers and parents or guardians regarding emergency teaching implemented in the context of a pandemic. The research presented in this article aims to contribute to this aim from a qualitative-interpretive approach, through the application of focus groups and semi-structured interviews. This allowed the categorical analysis of results in a deductive and inductive way, throwing interesting reflections on the perceptions of teachers and parents or guardian. Some of the most relevant findings of this study are related to the assessment of educational action in times of pandemic, the vision of teachers and parents as a learning community, and the role of emotions in learning.
