In higher education, procrastinating behaviors among students constitute a problematic situation with not so encouraging effects for their academic training. The objective of the study is to determine academic procrastination as a risk factor for academic failure of university students at the National University of the Altiplano, Peru. It is a descriptive-correlational study, where 298 university students between women and men participated. The Tuckman Procrastination Scale (ATPS) consisting of fifteen items was used as an instrument. Principal component factor analysis (PCA) and the Probit regression method were applied for the analysis of the results. The results show that students have an antipathy towards prolonged reading and emotional problems on a personal level, therefore, little interest in fulfilling their educational duties and inadequate time management due to lack of self-control and organization. When estimating the factorial analysis by principal components (PCA), it was determined that the factorial loads were reduced by three factors that explain 62.2% of the total variability. Finally, when estimating the marginal effects, it can be deduced that the greater the academic procrastination, the greater the risk of academic failure.
